Neroli essential oil has long used in aromatherapy circles. Sourced from the flowers of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium), neroli essential oil is said to offer a variety of benefits for mental and physical health.

Neroli is often used in perfume, cologne, cream, lotion, massage oil, and candles because well, it smells good! It’s scent (as with any scent) is hard to describe but wikipedia claims it smells sweet, “honeyed and somewhat metallic with green and spicy facets”. If that helps you, great. It smells good - that much I know.

In aromatherapy, neroli essential oil is typically used for the following health problems: anxiety, colds, headaches, high blood pressure, indigestion and, insomnia.

Other benefits of neroli essential oil may be reducing inflammation, alleviating stress, stimulate circulation, and enhance mood.

When used in skin-care and hair products, neroli essential oil is thought to treat oily skin, reduce signs of aging, and potentially diminish the appearance of scars and stretch marks.

Benefits of Neroli Essential Oil

As with many essential oils the body of research providing scientific proof is limited, the preliminary studies on neroli suggest that the oil may offer certain benefits. Here's a look at what some of the research has suggested thus far:

1) Neroli Essential Oil for Anxiety

Studies suggest that neroli essential oil may help ease anxiety. In a 2014 study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine researchers examined the effect of neroli oil aromatherapy on menopausal symptoms, stress, and estrogen in postmenopausal women.

The participants used neroli essential oil in a diffuser and inhaled for five minutes twice daily for five days. The participants displayed an improved quality of life related to menopausal symptoms, increased sexual desire, and reduced blood pressure.

In another study looking at the benefits of Neroli essential oil, published in 2013, Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, used a blend containing neroli essential oil was found to reduce anxiety and alleviate sleep problems in a group of coronary angioplasty patients in an intensive care unit. Definitely a small sample size but promising results nonetheless.

2) Neroli Essential Oil For High Blood Pressure

The benefits of neroli essential oil may aid in blood pressure control, according to a small study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2012.

In the study, 83 people with high blood pressure or prehypertension inhaled the aroma of either a placebo fragrance or an aromatherapy blend containing neroli, lavender, ylang-ylang, and marjoram essential oils for 24 hours. Results revealed that those assigned to the aromatherapy blend experienced a significant decrease in blood pressure, as well as in levels of the stress hormone cortisol.


3)  Neroli Essential Oil Exhibits Antimicrobial & Antioxidant Activities

The fragrant blossoms of the bitter orange tree don’t just produce an oil that smells amazing. Research shows that the chemical composition of neroli essential oil has both antimicrobial and antioxidant powers.

Antimicrobial activity was exhibited by neroli against six kinds of bacteria, two types of yeast and three different fungi in a study published in the Pakistan Journal of Biological Sciences. Neroli oil exhibited a marked antibacterial activity. Neroli essential oil also exhibited a very strong antifungal activity compared with the standard antibiotic. (Dr. Axe)
